Indoor and outdoor spore trap pairs, why the outdoor control decides the whole result, and how long to run the pump.

Airborne spores are the exposure pathway, so air sampling tells you what occupants are actually breathing. Use it for a musty odour, occupant symptoms or an IAQ complaint with no visible growth, for baseline comparisons, and for post-remediation clearance.
The method
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Method | Spore trap, ASTM D7391-20 |
| Accreditation | AIHA-LAP EMLAP 173498 |
| Media | Air-O-Cell cassette or equivalent |
| Turnaround | 3 to 5 business days |
On site
- Attach the cassette to the pump in the breathing zone.
- Run 10 to 25 litres of air through each cassette.
- For every cassette, record the air volume and the sample location on the COC.
- Plan for an outdoor reference. The lab compares indoor results with the outdoor reference where applicable, and clearance needs indoor spore levels comparable to outdoor.
What the report tells you
The certified report identifies fungal genera and gives spore counts. Genera IRIS commonly identifies include Cladosporium, Aspergillus/Penicillium, Stachybotrys, Chaetomium, basidiospores and Alternaria.
