Personal breathing zone (PBZ) sampling is how you document worker exposure to respirable crystalline silica under OSHA 1926.1153. Use it when workers cut, drill or jackhammer concrete or masonry, or do other OSHA Table 1 tasks such as abrasive blasting and tuck-pointing.
Talk to the lab first
Before you sample, tell the lab your task type, matrix and regulatory requirement. They confirm the method, filter media and sampling duration in one reply. Contact the lab or email support@irislaboratories.com.
On site
- Clip the sampler to the worker's lapel, in the breathing zone.
- Record each sample on the silica COC.
The limits your result is compared with
| Limit | Value |
|---|---|
| OSHA PEL, 8-hour TWA | 50 µg/m³ |
| OSHA Action Level, 8-hour TWA | 25 µg/m³ |
| NIOSH REL | 0.05 mg/m³ |
| ACGIH TLV | 0.025 mg/m³ |
Method and turnaround
PBZ samples are analysed by NIOSH 7500 / 7602 (IR). The certified report, COC and PDF arrive by email in 3 to 5 business days, in a format accepted for OSHA submissions.
Sending samples
Drop off at 2333 US-22 West, Union, NJ 07083, Monday to Friday before 4:00 PM ET, or ship overnight with the COC inside the package.
For pre-demolition jobs, pair bulk analysis to characterise the hazard with PBZ sampling to document worker exposure during and after the work.
